Thinking activity : modernist poems

● Modernism:

Modernism according to me; Modern Age is the age of transformed and it's all about private and social life. The change from the old to the new; like narrowness and spiritual ideas to universal and open-minded way. From blind faith to rational thinking is very interestingly I find in this age. The modern era means new values, new ideas, new life - style, mee rules and Western influence. The literature of the New Age is the literature of challenge and of the reconstruction of new world. Because, after world war one (1914 - 1918) and world war two (1939 - 1945) is very important for this changes and new Values.

◆ General Characteristics of the Modern Age:-

 ●Anxiety and Interrogation,
 ●Art for Life's sake,
●Growing Interest in the poor and the working classes,
●Impact of socio- economic conditions on literature,
 ●Psychology and Literature,
●The Impact of the Two world wars,
 ●International character of Literature,
●The Influence of Radio, Cinema & Television. This are the characteristics of modern era.

   Modernist poems; 1) The Embankment

The poem is may be about one man who is capitulate person. And he wants to peace and something powerful; because, man is addicted to something. Man or particular person who talk with god and say something. Here I find two words like, Old star and blanket; this two words are shown falling and bad things. When old star shows us falling down and Blanket is symbool of darkness. And people always try for existence.

Key words like, Gold heels, 'I', sky, blanket, god, so, this are the key words in this poem.

   2) Darkness by Joseph Campbell

It's four /4 lines Irish poem. Title itself is one of the best point to understand the poem. Darkness means the bad part of something and it's not good for human beings. So here something is 'lost' and than rise of new way of life. So, here I find existence and existentialism. So, it's deep & meaningful but, easily understand with simple language.

Key words; Darkness, soul, lost, need.

   3) Image by Edward Storey

The poem 'Image'  is only 3 lines, but comprehensive meaning.  Here woeful condition and full mood but, dark night so, I find lonely person and he or she has sorrow and unhappy condition. So, some key words loke, Pyre, full moo.

  4) 'In a station of the metro' by Ezra Pound

Pound's two lines poem is very interesting and very simply I understand this. Here, Ezra says about the Paris Metro Station. Because, some crowds of people and voice of metros. Train is simbol of various kinds of people, religion, culture and different languages. So, it's vast and deep meaningful poem, and I personally like this.

Words, Petal (of tree), black bough etc.

 5) The Pool by H. D. Hilda Doolittle

Only 5 lines in this poem, and each lines are more relevant to the title. Here, one water - rock is as a symbol and this is the best example of something connect with each other. And one of the best example of River; it's sometimes deep or sometimes vast flow of water. So, this combination is very important for this poem.

Like, Pool,  River, water etc.

6) Insouciance by Richard Al dingin

"Insouciance" is one short poem by Richard and it's five lines. May be he talks about soldiers or kings. Because, they are fearless and honest, they have power to change politics and somehow they doesn't afraid of any fear or pressage. One day we will wear white winged and become doves, it is poets imagination. So, it's my understanding about this poem.

Word;  White wings, Doves, fearlessness etc.

7) Morning at the window by T. S. Eliot

This poem by T. S. Eliot and he write in London. This poem is outbreak version of World War One. He has commiserate for people and specially children, because they doesn't have enough door and clothes. He write about condition of country and so many affected people. This poem has 9 lines and it's easy to understand for me.

Key words, Basement Damp soul, Twisted faces etc.

8) The Red wheelbarrow by William Carlos Williams

The Red Wheelbarrow is one of the best poem by William Carlos. This poem is different to understand for me. Red wheelbarrow is kind of  Vehicle. And another thing is White chicken. So, its very complicated modern poem.

Words like, white chicken, wheelbarrow etc.

9) Anecdote of the Jar by Wallace Stevens

The poem is published in 1919. This poem is 12th lines and each line is meaningful. Sometimes we feel like Baffle. The talking about the "JAR". I find here the beauty of Nature and the beauty of real things. So, it's my point of view about this poem.

Key words, Jar, hill, ground etc.

10) "I" by E. E. Cummings

Literature is also relate some time movie and movie help to us some different idea and difficulties in our life, study, even get knowledge also.

This movie director and hero both are same.Charlie Chaplin is most famous and good comedy man in the modern time.Charlie Chaplin's The Modern Time movie released in 1936. In this movie we can see starting with the clock. This movie describe sheep-ale type people. In this full movie we can see about the modernity and how people react about it.In this time people have not job thus they always ready to find job.

In this movie we can see about jobless burglary, capitalism, the modern people like sheeple, loss of freedom and other various things.During this time Industrialism is very important people like to work anytime anywhere. All the machine controlled by the group of the people.

     The modernity in Machine :

In this movie we see the modern machine made by some people and they gift to boss. Then they try to give Demo with charlie Chaplin. In middle time of experiment machine became bad thus effect became bad on The Charlie Chaplin.People do not controlled the machine. This scene is very interesting and comedy scene in this time.During this time this things are very interesting because this time we can not look this ideal work.

Here we can see the class conflict also. The high people try the experiment on workers. This different try to give idea about it.

The modern people are compared with domestic animals. In the following scene there are modern people leaving the public station. Now the life of modern people seems quite similar with the life of domestic animal. Domestic animals are controlled by their master. In the same way modern people are controlled by new system. It symbolizes that modern people become a part of this new system. The idea of loss of freedom is given by Charlie Chaplin in this scene.

In this movie we can find the things about the life style. Charlie Chaplin he thinks about the good life with his partner.Dream he saw that  he lives good life and rich life.He also get job and became routine life is good than real life.He lost various job and get also this are some changes in his life. This is good idea...

In this movie last scene describes about totally calm in the city and street and footpath also.In last pic give idea about it.

This Scene we can see that hero and the heroine walking with on the path. The scene became in Sunset time and attractive scene.Path is blank thus we can focus the character. Both are describe they go in start new life this type idea gives this picture.

• The Play 'Breath'

CURTAIN Up

1. Faint light on stage littered with miscellaneous rubbish. Hold about five seconds.
2. Faint brief cry and immediately inspiration and slow increase of light together reaching maximum - together in about ten seconds. Silence and hold for about five seconds.
3. Expiration and slow decrease of light together reaching minimum together (light as in 1) in about ten seconds and immediately cry as before. Silence and hold about five seconds.

My views on videos of the play:

1. Breath by Damien Hirst :-
This video shows the picture of rubbish kind of medical garbage. There is a keyboard also. We also can see the symbol of Swastik. this symbol we can recall remember Hitler and his symbol of Swastik. Another thing is that with a lot of medicine. it is full of absurdity or garbage it related somewhere with our life.

2.  Breath by Lina De Jordan :-
this video shows the different fruits.we can compare this fruits with human being As all fruits, have their own identity, some are jointed and some are separated, same the way, human beings have their own world.some are living together and some are seperated. All the fruits have their specific benefits, and people also their unique personality.

3.National Theatre school first year Technical production class project, production of Samuel Beckett's play Breath :-
in this video we can see full of darkness and one sharpen yelling of someone's voice.with a one hearness of voice become us afraid with this voice.
in this video we can see first darkness and then light. and also we can see the concept of light and darkness we can compare it with our happiness and death.
About the Edward Said:

Edward Wadie Said was a professor of literature at Columbia University, a public intellectual, and a founder of the academic field of postcolonial studies. A Palestinian American born in Mandatory Palestine, he was a citizen of the United States by way of his father, a U.S. Army veteran.

Orientalism
Orientalism is a way of seeing that imagines, emphasizes, exaggerates and distorts differences of Arab peoples and cultures as compared to that of Europe and the U.S. It often involves seeing Arab culture as exotic, backward, uncivilized, and at times dangerous.

What is Orientalism?
Orientalism, defined it as the acceptance in the West of “the basic distinction between East and West as the starting point for elaborate theories, epics, novels, social descriptions, and political accounts concerning the Orient, its people, customs, ‘mind,’ destiny and so on.”
According to Said, Orientalism dates from the period of European Enlightenment and colonization of the Arab World. Orientalism provided a rationalization for European colonialism based on a self-serving history in which “the West” constructed “the East” as extremely different and inferior, and therefore in need of Western intervention or “rescue”.
Orientalism is widely considered a seminal and foundational text for postcolonial studies, a discipline that has expanded to consider not only political systems of hegemony and imperialism, but also power structures and relationships in philosophy, literature, the arts and other fields.

“Orientalism is a style of thought based upon an ontological and epistemological distinction made between “the Orient” and  “the Occident.”

Palestine Issue:

Edward Said talked about the issue of Palestine that what is the condition of the people there, they haven't their mother land because of the forcefully occupation by Israel. From 1948 to present time Palestinian are suffering a lot for the peace and their homeland but Western countries do not take any kind of action on this issue.
We also can say that why Europe and America built a new state for Jew people surrounding Islamic countries. Edward Said explained this issue through cultural, religious and political views.

Movie review: Midnight's children, The Black Prince, The Reluctant fundamentalist

   * Midnight's children

Midnight's Children is a 1981 novel by British Indian author Salman Rushdie. It deals with India's transition from British colonialism to independence and the partition of British India. It is considered an example of postcolonial, postmodern, and magical realist literature.
" Midnight's Children " a novel by  Salman Rushdie  and "Midnight's Children" film  was  directed by  Deepa Mehta.

The story is about two boys and they are Saleem and Shiva. Saleem and Shiva has telepathy power to call other children who born at that same night in that one hour. They called themselves midnight's children. It also talks about emergency by Indira Gandhi.

The birth of Saleem and Shiva at same time, it also shows the birth of two nations India and Pakistan. And with growth of both these boys the growth of two nations are also shown. There is strong voice of Marxism. Poor become rich, rich become poor.

* The black prince

The Black Prince is a 2017 international historical drama film directed by Kavi Raz and featuring the acting debut of Satinder Sartaaj. It tells the story of Duleep Singh, the last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire and the Punjab area, and his relationship with Queen Victoria.

 * The Reluctant Fundamentalist

The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a post-9/11 story about the impact of the Al Qaeda attacks on one Pakistani man and his treatment by Americans in reaction to them. In 2007, Nair read the manuscript of Hamid's unpublished novel, The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

The novel and movie both follows frame narrative. The story is of young Pakistani boy with American dream, Changez Khan. He was enjoying his life in America and he used to say that he loves America but suddenly a one thing is happened and it changes his whole life. The movie begins with the kidnapping of American professor, who is teaching at Lahore university. Then Bobby comes to take interview of Changez, who is also teaching at same university. Bobby is CIA agent. The interview is happening at Lahore cafe and all together there is flashback in which Changez is telling his life in America. Here we can find some post colonial elements also, and I am here trying to see those elements. After the attack his life in America has become terrible. All are looking towards him with doubt, and asking him if he knows anything about the attack. His American girlfriend, Erica also used his identity as Pakistani and not same as any other individual. These things hurt him most.
